Thanks for taking the time to join me, and to read my blog…
Cleaning out the closet…Virtually!
Sshhhh! I was having a clear out today and found one of my daughters old diaries. It’s about 25 years old, she must have been about 14 at the time. Makes great reading! Haha. Don’t worry, I asked her first…
It’s day 10 of my isolation, and to be honest it seems to be flying by. I’ve got heaps of time for all the things I wouldn't normally have time for.
I decided to clean the attic today. (Something I’ve been putting off for a long time) when I came across a box containing amongst other things, my daughters old diaries. Well! I mean, come on ! don’t tell me you wouldn’t.
They were about 25 years old (she’s 39 now so surely the same rules don’t apply) I carefully picked up the one with the pink furry cover, unclipped the tiny clasp and opened it. The word’s jumped out at me. “WHY ARE YOU READING MY DIARY?” I closed it quickly. I thought for a moment, before opening it again, it wouldn’t hurt to read just a few pages surely.
Have you heard the saying curiosity killed the cat? well, Satisfaction bought him back…
I flicked through quickly, smiling at the little drawings and love heart’s with the word’s, I love Benjy. Who the hell was Benjy, I don’t remember that one ha-ha. BUT! before you lose faith in me completely, I should tell you that I read no further, placed it back in the box and promptly went to call my daughter. I told her what I'd found. She said that she couldn’t believe I hadn’t read them, (Shhh!) and suggested we both open a bottle of wine, and face time each other while we went through the box together.
Well I cant tell you what a great time we had. The afternoon flew by as we went through old photos, diaries, everything. In fact we spent more time laughing together in each others virtual company than we had in a long time. Bring on isolation day 11…
Life happens...
It all begins with an idea.
SOCIETY WAS THE GREATEST GIFT I EVER GAVE MYSELF!
By the time I was 60, I had pretty much become the person people wanted me to be. I don’t know how this happens, but it does. It’s a slow process, and one that takes over your whole being, your personalty and basically your whole life. Until somehow, it just doesn’t belong to you any more.
For me, the transition from a young lover to a 60 year old Nanna has been a pleasant one. I’ve loved having my children and my grand daughter, first and foremost in my life. But without realizing, I got lost somewhere along the way.
As they grew and became more independent, I quite readily took a back seat on life. I found myself just sitting around, waiting, goodness, knows what for!
This went on for about five year’s. I went to work, came home, babysat, did whatever was needed of me basically. I found my only escape in the bottle of wine that kept me company every evening. Without fail, there it was each night after work waiting for me ,like a friend ready to listen. Glass number one welcomed me home and told me to put my feet up and relax, we would contemplate the day together and smile, feeling excited about life in general.
If you want to drink, get dressed, go out and socialize. Surround yourself with positivity!
Glass number two never could really live up to number one. But still we made plan’s. One day we would travel again, like when I was younger, oh the memories! Glass number two was always prompting me to do the things i wanted to do. Always encouraging and supportive of my plan’s. Get dressed up and go out more, instead of sitting alone every evening with just me for company, you’re too young for this.
Glass number three? Now this was on a strong son of a bitch! What the hell do you think you’re doing, sitting here night after night? You’re letting time pass you by. Get back out there. Go on a date! You don’t have to sit here alone every night, it’s your choice, only you can change this. And knowing you like i do, I know you can get out there and do anything you want to.
How do you become your own worst enemy…
Remember your dictum in life before you forgot who you are? B.A.D. ball’s. Attitude and direction… come on shazza, book a trip somewhere, go traveling, you’ve always wanted to go to Burma, why not start there? It’s too cold for work at the moment (my work is outdoors) two months in the sun would be amazing! Let’s look, see if we can find a good flight deal. And to be fair to glass number three, it helped me plan the whole trip from start to finish. Even helped me decide on what clothes to take. Gosh it was so exciting , sitting every evening making plan’s together, dreaming of what it would be like traveling to a country I hadn't been to before, to travel away from the usual tourist traps and just be me!It’s always nice to share your plans with someone else as you grow more excited about the idea. It was usually at this stage we would invite glass number four…
Drinking at home alone no matter what your background, leads to a lonely life and attracts negativity…
Glass number four. Well! what can I tell you about this one? It totally agreed with everything we had to say and all the plans we had made. But, as we sat together we would start to get tired. Gosh! Look at the time, we’d been at it for almost four hour’s. I had work tomorrow, I should go to bed. Let’s carry on a little longer glass number four would say, commenting on the fact that we had some great flights, and the clothes I’d chosen were ideal, perfect for a hot country, or do you i think that maybe I should travel light and buy local clothes when I’m there as they would be much more suitable to the climate, and after all Asia is so cheap. I’d sit and ponder this for a while, not quite being able to decide. (it made sense at the time) By this stage my head would be filling a little fuzzy, so I thought it best to invite glass number five who I would send to chase glass number one. Only it never could catch it! so it would send me off to bed promising that we would book it all tomorrow after a good night’s sleep.
I never quite trusted glass number five as it came from another bottle!
Life is much clearer when you’re not looking through the bottom of a glass…
And this pretty much went on for four or five years… Until one day, glass number six gate crashed the party, and I realized that enough was enough!!!
And I’ve never looked back!
I make a point now of only drinking socially and never alone..
Live your life and forget your age...
It all begins with an idea.
When does it happen? That moment, the minute, the second. That time when we transition from “young”to“old”I’ll let you into a little secret. It doesn’t! It’s all a state of mind, of society’s take on thing’s and of the company you keep!
Surround yourself with positive energy. People that care about you! The one’s that listen and engage in conversation, I mean really listen. Not the ones that nod as their eyes start to cross and wonder in different directions as they’re looking for someone to listen to them talk about their own egotistical selves. You know the one’s, the energy suckers! These people are draining. Avoid them like the plague, because, here they are! The ones, that over the years, will take away your very self, and slowly little by little eat you alive.
The more you’re prepared to take a back seat, the more you'll gradually be seated at the back of the room. Until one day you find you’re the only one in the room.
This is what negativity does. It’s catching. Have you ever gone somewhere, socially maybe, full of beans, really been looking forward to this for a few days, and as you enter the room there they are, the peter pans of society (look at me! listen to me) you try to join in, share a little of what you’ve been doing, a new trip you're planning maybe. Losing battle! energy suckers only talk about themselves and what they’re doing. Avoid ! By the time you leave for home you’re feeling totally deflated. A little more of yourself chipped away.
EVERYWHERE YOU GO, MAKE SURE YOU SMILE. HAPPINESS IS CONTAGIOUS, SPREAD IT AROUND…
SMILE AND THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU.
This is why I cant stress enough, stay away from negativity and negative people who’s main conversation consists of me myself and I. You’ll only come away feeling you have nothing to contribute, when in fact all you have done is surround yourself with negative vibes, which flow around anyone within reach. Look out for the happy smiling people. Even writing this I can feel the positivity flowing my way. positive company energizes me, I feel strong and confident and full of life. I find that for me, this is the key to happiness. Positivity is like an source you can feed off, as is, unfortunately negativity. Do you see my point?
It took me a long time to realize that it wasn’t me, I wasn’t boring, or getting “too old” blaming myself for the knot in my stomach, and eventually associating these negative emotions with my age, thinking it was because I was an “old” woman! AND THAT! Is when you start to go down the negative spiral that people call old age! Well guess what? they’re wrong, to age is a natural process of the body, it may slowly change you phicically, BUT! and I stress, WE, do not! We grow wiser, we understand life more, we are compationate because we’ve probably been there before, we have loved, we have been loved. How on earth can any of this be seen as anything but inspiring. Get out there, share what you have to give. Spread your energy. Feel only pitty for the “me, myself and I people” because eventually they will need people like you in their lives.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
